I have written several articles law enforcement. A list of links have been provided at bottom of this article for your convenience. This article will, however address different aspects on Law Enforcement.
I am going out on a limb here, but I have friends of all races. I don’t care what color their skin is, if you treat me with respect I will treat you the same. To me all lives matter. I treat people the way I want to be treated. If you are in danger I will do my best to help you. I hold the door open for everybody. I talk to everybody. At work, it doesn’t matter what your job is, I treat all my co-workers with respect. I am an ICU nurse, I don’t get to choose whom I take care of. I have taken care of criminals with prison guards in the room. I have taken care of cops, black people, Asian people, young, old, rich, poor and homeless it doesn’t matter everybody gets treated the same. They get treated with respect, empathy and kindness. I was born in New York state, and raised by a mother who never heard of racism and skin color was never an issue. In 1970, when I was very young, my Mother and I visited my newly married sister in Alabama. This is when we first became aware of separate but equal facilities. My sister did not have a washer and dryer, so we went to a laundry mat. Apparently a black laundry mat. One of the other patrons told us of the fact. They did not ask us to leave, just told us where the white laundry mat was. My mother asked them if it was okay for us to stay there and finish our laundry. They said no problem. My mother proceeded to have a nice conversation with an elderly black lady while our clothes was washed. At the time I did not think much of this, but as I became older I began to realize how wonderful my mother was and how fortunate I was to have been raised by such a person. If more parents raised their children this way, there would be a lot less racism in this world.
The majority of the population in this country are good and decent people, tolerant and caring and not at all racist. However you can find a small portion of people that are bad. It doesn’t matter where you look. There are bad lawyers, politicians, doctors, nurses and cops. You can find the bad ones everywhere. We don’t condemn these career paths because of a few bad characters. So cops should not be treated any differently. If farmers have a sick animal they remove it from the population so the rest of his livestock won’t get sick. We should do the same with cops, remove the ones that are guilty of criminal behavior. Nobody that has a job can deny that they would like to have more training so they can do a better job or get a promotion. The police are the same. Better training, better pay and fewer hours are the answers. In the hospital we are instructed to report any unsafe behavior to our superiors. Lives are at stake. The patient deserves our very best care. The same should be true of the police department. Bad or poorly trained cops make it difficult for the other 99 percent to do there jobs. The only way bad behavior will be corrected is if corrective actions are taken. Cops need to know that this behavior will not be overlooked or condoned. The general population also needs to know this as well. Transparency is the key while secrecy is the enemy.
