Our History Deserves to Be Protected Not Destroyed

Every country in the world has a time or an event that its people would like to forget. We as a people and a nation should not be ashamed of our history. Remembering and studying our history is how we learn from our mistakes and helps us to grow, mature and improve as a country. When we choose to ignore the past, try to erase the past and forget the past, it is when we are doomed to repeat those same mistakes. Statues, monuments, museums and documents help us to remember the past. If you find any of these to be offensive that is your right as an American. But being an American doesn’t give you the right to destroy them and forever destroy there value to the human race. If you find something offensive discuss with the powers at be how it could be made less offensive. Take for instance monuments, add a descriptive plaque to it, thereby giving both sides a voice. By destroying them you are silencing that voice, and you are being selfish and petulant and are acting like spoiled children, not mature adults. Too many artifacts have been destroyed throughout history. If all of these things had been preserved, we would definitely be more technologically advanced and quite possibly more tolerant as a human race. There is an old saying attributed to the Greek story teller Aesop “United We Stand, Divided We Fall”. This is a very powerful statement and all too often forgotten. The citizens of this country have shown throughout its history, that when we work together, we can overcome any adversity and accomplish truly great deeds. No task is too small nor too great. Remember this fact, destroying is easy, building is hard. Destruction only leaves nothingness and accomplishes nothing in the long term.
