I have written several articles law enforcement. A list of links have been provided at bottom of this article for your convenience. This article will, however address different aspects on Law Enforcement.
As a country we have not seen rioting in such levels throughout the country since the 1960’s. I don’t believe now is the time to cut spending in the police departments. With fewer police on the streets more lawless behavior will prevail. To see the effects of less law, you can go back to the wild west. Vigilante behavior and lynch mobs were quite common. People took the law into there own hands. People today would be in much the same situation, they would have to protect themselves. Each house would become a stronghold. Other options for the those that could afford it would be private security personnel and agencies. Worse yet would be to pay for protection services offered by organized crime. We see this in a lot of the larger cities. Store owners having to pay for protection.
What we really need is a national certification and training program for the police department, so everybody is on the same page. More training, effective techniques for non lethal subduing of criminals. One such technique is being currently taught to health care professionals and is called “Handle With Care”. We also need, as has been recommended, third party oversight of any criminal behavior by the police. We can all agree when people are over worked they become less efficient and also less tolerant and effective. So we need to limit the amount of overtime for the police. We need to hire more police so we can have better coverage and decrease response times. I also think we need to get back to having cops patrol the streets in the larger cities, ie “beat cops“. This helps to makes the police and the citizens of the cities into a more cohesive unit.
We need to address another problem area, the mental well being of the police. They need better support for psychological problems. More paid time off would also help. Also more social interaction and events with the communities. Fairs and the like. Get the police more involved with their communities. Develop relationships with the people. More PR work by the police department. Having somebody remind the general population what services the Police Department provides would help.
