The Uncontrolled Fires In California Were Totally Avoidable

I have written several articles the environment. A list of links have been provided at bottom of this article for your convenience. This article will, however address different aspects on the environment and the planet in general.

This is aarticle is an opinion piece. However, it is based on quite a bit of experience and knowledge and an inordinant amount of research, and even a college degree. Over the last 3.5 years I have written and published 18 books. The vast majority of these are non-fiction. Two of those books are on the environment. These books are a two volume set entitled “Saving Our World”. I have just recently updated the set and re-published the set in a second edition. So while I do not have a PHD in the environment, I am not without a considerable amount of knowledge on the subject. So when I say something about the environment, it might behove you to pay atention to what I have to say. Having said that lets get started. This will be a short post.

To start with California has mismanaged their forests for decades, second of all people should not be building houses in our state and national forests. Just like people should not build houses on the slopes of hills that are prone to mud slides, yet people rebuild their houses after they are destroyed time after time. Forests are basically a very large living organism. Forest fires are a way of maintaining the health in these forests. Some trees actually require fire to propagate. For decades we have stopped this cycle by promptly putting out naturally occuring fires. For one thing, fires help to kill off invasive insectssuch as pine borer beatles. These beatles can devastate entire forests of pine trees in the blink of an eye. If you want to see their work just go to Yosemite National Park.

The second thing that we do wrong is failing to clean up our forests of detritis. Supposedly fallen trees serve as homes for many species of animals. What these fallen trees serve to do is to create a breeding ground for fires. These dead trees, along with their leaves or pine needles act as tinder for these fires. All it takes is a careless camper or a lighting strike to set these forests ablaze. To rectify this problem we can do one of two things. We can either clean up all the dead fall or we can set controlled fires to eliminate these fire hazards. The argument that we are eliminating the houses of many indigienous species by following on these two techniques, is ludicrous. Take a look at the forests after they have been ravaged by a run-away fire. Not only did the animals lose their homes, they lost their lives as well. So we are now paying the price for mismanagement, negligence and inaction

The problem we see aur selves in is further exacerbated by unusually heavy winds. These heavy winds are causing fires to jump natural and arificial fire breaks. These fires that we now have in California are the result of overly educated people with little to no common sense making one poor decision after another. Thanks to these heavy winds these firest are no longer restricted to forests. If you live in California, you may be looking at losing your house next.
