The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) adopted a recommendation from vaccine advisers to remove thimerosal from all influenza vaccines used in the U.S., despite studies that show the preservative is safe.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. approved the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which voted last month in favor of using only single-dose influenza vaccines without thimerosal.
Thimerosal is a preservative used in multidose flu vaccines but has not been used in other routine childhood vaccines since 2001. It has long been a target of anti-vaccine activists who falsely claim it is linked to neurodevelopmental disorders including autism.
Manufacturers said the ruling should not affect their ability to provide vaccines this year. HHS also said manufacturers have confirmed they have capacity to ensure supplies for the Vaccines for Children program and adults remain uninterrupted.
“We acknowledge the recommendation of the new Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices,” a Sanofi spokesperson said. “We will have sufficient supply of Sanofi flu vaccine to support customer preference for this season.”
Seqirus spokesperson Melanie Kerin said the company already is delivering thimerosal-free influenza vaccines for the upcoming flu season.
“We don’t expect the ACIP recommendation to have any impact on our vaccine supply or shipment timings,” Kerin said.
The removal of thimerosal from flu vaccines comes after 261 children died of influenza-associated illness during the 2024-’25 season. It is the highest number of pediatric deaths reported in any non-pandemic influenza season since the condition became reportable in 2004.
The ACIP discussion on thimerosal was spearheaded by Lyn Redwood, R.N., M.S.N., who made false claims about the preservative’s safety and effectiveness and said its removal “is a good place to start with making America healthy again.” She previously led the Children’s Health Defense, an anti-vaccine group founded by Kennedy.
A document prepared by CDC staff reviewing studies on thimerosal was removed from the CDC website before the meeting started. That document concluded “the evidence does not support an association between thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism spectrum disorder or other neurodevelopmental disorders.” An ACIP member said it was removed at the direction of Kennedy’s office.
Numerous liaisons from health care groups who attended the ACIP meeting affirmed the safety of thimerosal and questioned why the CDC’s research had been removed.
Matthew Zahn, M.D., representing the National Association of County and City Health Officials, noted the safety of thimerosal “is based on a 25-year robust history of studies that examined the real-life outcomes for children that have received thimerosal-containing vaccines either in the prenatal or pediatric period.”
ACIP member H. Cody Meissner, M.D., professor of pediatrics at the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine, was the only committee member who voted against recommending only using flu vaccines without thimerosal.
“The ACIP makes recommendations based on scientific evidence as much as possible,” Dr. Meissner said. “And there is no scientific evidence that thimerosal has caused a problem.”
Conclusion
My question is why this even an issue. Thimerosal contains Mercury, which is at least 10x more toxic to the nervous system. (It may be as high as 1,000X more toxic than lead). Guess who had lead water pipes, you guessed it the Romans. Maybe that is why so many of its leaders were bat-shit crazy. Why are we even using multi-dose vials? He knew over 10 years ago what was causing the increased numbers of autistic cases in our children. Why in the hell did he say that he would release this information in by November 2025? Spoiler alert he still hasn’t released it yet.
I read the book so you won’t have to. It really is a boring book. Having said that, it is quite an eye-opener.
