I have written several articles healthcare issues. A series of links have been provided at the bottom of this article for your convenience.
I was cajoled and coerced into taking cholesterol medications when I was in my late 20s. My levels were around 210. During this time I was a long distance athlete competing in triathlons from Sprintman distance all the way up to the Iron Man distance races. My body fat was hovering around 7 to 8 percent, needless to say I was in pretty good shape. What was my problem? Well I inherited some bady genes from my family one of which was elevated cholesterol levels. One thing I however did not have in my family was Dementia or Alzheimer’s. Take one guess what my mother died with after taking lipid lowering drugs for decades, you got it Dementia.
I took two drugs, Zocor and Tricor, because my body was resistant to tthe usual regime, even with these two drugs my levels never got much below 200. What I did get however, were body aches and pains that required me to take Nsaids daily to relieve the pain. While I never had a photographic memory, I came pretty close, during my years in college I could memorize large amounts of information. As I reached my mid forties I started having problems remembering things, and peoples names from my past were disappearing. No matter what I did They would not come back. Even though I was now a nursing professional, I really had not investigated what was causing this. I never thought that My trusted doctor would prescribe anything that would be dangerous for me to take. Finally, while giving report to an oncoming ICU Nurse, we came upon the subject of cholesterol lowering meds. This is when my eyes were opened up and I actually started thinking about what was going on with my body and it all started to make sense.
You see Cholesterol Lowering drugs such as Lipitor and Zocor are the cash cow drugs of Big Pharma. They make billions of dollars on these meds. I always wondered how they decided on what wee healthy levels for circulating cholesterol? It turns out that the numbers have changed over the years. Just 40 to 50 years ago 350 was considered to be healthy level. Now it is 150. What has changed during this time. Well there is more obesity, more cases of dementia and Alzheimer’s, but strangely our overall cardiac health has not improved. If you want to do a quick check look at a photos of beach goers in the 70’s and compare these to photos of beach goers today. You would have a hard time find any obese people in the 70’s images. Another thing that has changed is that we as a country have become more and more dependent on processed foods. I could write an entire book on the demise of our society. Back in the 50s families could live on one income, mothers staid at home and made nutritious meals. Children played outdoors instead of sitting in front of TVs and computer screens, now tablets and smart phones. Families no longer can survive on single incomes, so now the children are fending for themselves or exhausted parents after working all day just throw a box of mac n’ cheese or some other processed food in the stove or microwave oven. Crime levels have risen as well because there is no one at home to guide the children, as the numbers of latch key kids increases. Gangs are serving as surrogate family structures, and drugs are becoming all too easy to access. Crime levels are rising and it is no longer safe for children to play outdoors in their front yards or even in parks.
I know I have gone off on a tangent. I listened to an Instagram reel, “theneurofactory” Part three.
It discusses how the serum levels of cholesterol through the years. According to this group, people with high cholesterol don’t get Alzheimer’s. Forty years ago it was perfectly fine to have a cholesterol level of 300. A pathologist in her late 70’s stated that she used to do all the testing on blood cholesterol levels, and it was considered perfectly fine to have a level of 350. We are now told that we can’t go over 190, with 150 being preferred. The fattiest organ in the body is the brain. Cholesterol is used to protect the brain against harmful chemicals, such as heavy metals. We also need circulating fat to replaced the damaged myelin sheath on our neurons. As we age we need greater circulating levels of cholesterol to replace more and more aging and damaged neurons. Cholesterol lowering medications make it more difficult for the nervous system to repair itself. The side effect of a depleted nervous system and brain is Dementia for one. Alzheimer’s and muscle wasting, breast cancer, Vitamin D deficiency are other side effects. For one thing our sex hormones are made from cholesterol and if we don’t have enough Vitamin D we can’t get enough of minerals into our bones so we develop osteoporosis. It is all about balance and maintaining safe serum levels, and those levels change as our body ages.
80% of the cholesterol that the liver makes is from glucose and 20% is made from fat. It is not the butter on the bread it is the bread under the butter that is the problem. HDL carries excess cholesterol from the blood back into the liver. LDL is called the bad guy. But what you have to remember is that the body doesn’t make anything bad. It has a role. Wherever there is damage, you’re going to find LDL, because it is the repairer and the rebuilder. Chemicals such as heavy metals, molds, toothpaste and even some foods damage the arterial walls, When damage is detected the LDL cholesterol comes along and plugs it up. If the damage is not repaired we will bleed at those sites into the tissues. All through the bloodstream there are little protein molecules. When a person is on a high carbohydrate diet releasing a lot of glucose into the blood the glucose connects with the protien molecules and they become sticky and they cause the blockage. This is the number one cause of heart disease. The number one cause of stroke. It is not cholesterol that causes these problems.
We all know that money, power and greed rule the world. Of course this is a bit simplistic, but you get the idea. When it comes down to our well being or billions of dollars in profits which one is going to win out?
Oh, one thing five years after I quit taking Zocor and Tricor, all those names of long forgotten people started flooding back, as a matter of fact they are still coming back. I am no longer taking Nsaids for pain relief. Because I was taking some many meds, I was suffering stomach upset, wel that went away too. So there is hope for you.
I have included some screen shots of other pages that I came across, for healthy living and things to avoid. I hope you find them helpful.
