I have written several articles on postings related to politicians. A list of links have been provided at bottom of this article for your convenience. This article will, however address different aspects on these politicians.
Mitch McConnell was born on February 20, 1942 to Addison Mitchell McConnell Sr. and Julia Odene McConnell in Sheffield, Alabama. He was raised in Athens, Alabama. He is of Scotchs-Irish-English descent. In 1944, his uper left leg was paralyzed by polio. His family nearly went bankrupt treating his affliction. His family moved around a lot, he eventually graduated from dupont Manual High School. He went on to graduate from University of Louisville with a BA in political science in 1964. At the age of 22 he interned with Senator John Sherman Cooper. In 1967 he graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law.
McConnell was married twice, he had three children by Sherrill Redmon from 1968 to 1980. He remarried in 1993 to his second wife Elaine Chao, Secretary of labor and Secretary of transportation under president Trump. McConnell had a triple bypass in 2003.
In 1967, Mitch enlisted in the US Army Reserves as a private at Louisville. Kentucky. Shortly after his arrival at Fort Knox, he was diagnosed with optic neuritis and deemed unfit for military service. He was shortly honorably discharged. This short stint in the military has been held against him throughout his career.
In 1974 McConnell was the Deputy Assistant Attorney General under President Gerald R. Ford. On 1977 he was elected the Jefferson County Judge and served until 1984.
He ran for and was elected to the US Senate from Kentucky in 1984. He gradually shifted from moderate to conservative republican over the years. In 1988 he voted against the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1987. Since 2004 to the present he has either been the minority or the majority leader of the Senate. He has gained a reputation as a skilled politician.
During the Obama administration he was described as being obstructionist. He used the art of the filibuster to limit Obama’s impact on America. He felt that his proposed legislation was have a negative impact on the economy. He also tried to prevent him from appointing judges to the Supreme Court.
While McConnell supports the majority of Trump’s initiatives, he does not always see eye to eye with his style of governing and his vituperative attacks on his enemies. During the impeachment McConnell worked diligently to speed up the acquittal process. While in Congress he has served in the following committees: Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; Committee on Appropriations; Committee on Rules and Administration; Select Committee on Intelligence.
He is against gun control, Obama care, against green new deal, he wants a stronger boarder, reduced taxing, free trade agreements, he supported the tax cuts and jobs act of 2017. He was opposed to the Iran nuclear deal. He supports Israel, and authorized military action against Iraq.
(Update 1/15/2021) Mitch McConnell supported the president throughout his 4 years. I thought he was a solid Aly of president Trump. However, what he turned out to be was an opportunist, and a fair weather friend. When president Trump truly needed him, he turned his back on him. All he had to do to help him was to initiate an investigation on election fraud. That would have legitimized Trump’s case, and maybe the Supreme Court would have treated it with more respect. Instead he jumped sides to try and maintain his position. When both senate races went to democrats in Georgia, he should have realized that his days were numbered. Schumer will not share the Senate with McConnell. He chose the wrong side.
