Black Lives Matter

I have written several articles Racism and Slavery. A list of links have been provided at bottom of this article for your convenience. This article will, however address different aspects on Racism and Slavery.

Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a movement that advocates non-violent civil disobedience. Protesting police brutality against  African American people. It currently has over 30 chapters in the US and sister organizations worldwide. They are also for legislation changes that support black liberation from oppression.

The movement began in 2013 after the aquital of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of African-American teen  Trayvon Martin in February 2012. The originators of the movement by Alicia Garza, Patridge Cullors and Opal Tometi. The movement received national attention in 2014 when street demonstrations were organized for the shooting deaths of 2 black men, Michael Brown and Eric Garner.

The BLM became involved in politics when they tried to make an impact in the 2016 presidential election. They once again made national and global headlines for protesting the killing of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police. There was an estimated 15 million to 26 million people involved in the protests, making it one of the largest movements in US history.

The BLM movement  is a social movement or loose confederation of groups advocating racial justice. It is decentralized with the emphasis on local leadership. Because of the  loose structure of BLM there has been a great deal of confusion surrounding it.  Several groups have monopolized on its name, and achieved tax exempt status as a result. Black Lives Matter Foundation and Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation are not affiliated with the original BLM group and have been disavowed.

According to the BLM website there are 13 guiding principles for BLM. A few of them are Diversity,  Globalism, Empathy, Restorative justice and Intergenerationality.

A broader movement,  involving other groups is emerging under the banner of Movement for Black Lives. In 2015 Johnetta Elzie, DeRay McKesson, Brittsny Packnett and Samuel Sinyangwe initiated Capaign Zero, aimed at promoting policy reforms to end police brutality.  They released a 10 point plan for reforms to policing including ending broken windows policy, increasing community oversight of police departments, and creating stricter guidelines for the use of force.

On 2016, there demands became less reasonable,  they called for decarceration in the US, reparations for slavery in the US, an end to mass surveillance,  investment in public education,  not incarceration, and community control of the police, empowering residents in communities of color to hire and fire police officers and issue subpoenas,  decide disciplinary consequences  and exercise control over city funding of police.

BLM have used various tactics to get there views heard. The use of hash tags, internet and social media. They have begun to use ptotests and rallies more frequently.  In the last few months In response to the killing of George Floyd,  the protests have frequetly turned violent with looting and destruction of public and private property occurring. Police and citizens have been hurt and killed during the rioting.

In response to BLM, several less well organized counter groups have arisen, All Lives Matter, White Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter to name a few. Of course you can’t say any of these three statements to a BLM member, there will be fighting. But the reverse is perfectly okay. BLM members are some of the most racist people in the world. BLM as a nonprofit organization do not adequately disclose their contributions.

There has been criticism and condemnation of BLM. They are frequently accused of being anti-police. Case in point one of there slogans is “pigs in the blanket, fry’em like bacon”. But the media doesn’t cover these slogans. All BLM protests are peaceful, despite all the video evidence to the contrary. There is no evidence that there is systemic racism in the police department, in many cities the majority of the police officers are black. The numbers show that more blacks get shot by cops then do whites, but it is also true that they commit more violent crimes than do other races. In fact more blacks are killed by blacks, as are more whites are killed by whites. It has been shown that races kill and rape more in their own race. Black women tend to be more marginalized than black men. This is true mainly because black men commit more crimes than do black women. So the men are more likely to be arrested than black women.
