Releasing Prisoners Early for Covid Considerations Sets A Bad Precedent

I have written several articles on the coronavirus and on masks. A series of links have been provided at the bottom of this article for your convenience. I have briefly discussed this subject in a previous posting. In this article I will discuss it in a more comprehensive manner.

The US has the largest incarcerated population in the world. About 2.3 million throughout the 50 states. They are crammed into facilities where they share everything from cells to showers to dining spaces. Which makes them more vulnerable to infection. There are many prisoners who are guilty of violent crimes, but are now older and more feeble and no longer present a danger to the community.

The prison wardens say that they are going to select the prisoners for early release judiciously. They state that without the early release of some prisoners they won’t be able to practice social distancing. They make the assertion that a lot of their older prisoners are highly susceptible to covid related to several comorbidities. Many prisoners were no sentenced to life without parole. By leaving them in the prison, we are basically sentencing them to a death sentence. A punishment that did not match the crime that many of them are guilty of.

There is much to be said for this argument. However, there are disturbing reports by police departments throughout the country where early releases prisoners are located, of New crimes being perpetrated by them. There has been cases of robbery, rape and even murder by these parolees. It is one thing to release non violent white collar criminals early it is another matter to release prisoners guilty of violent crimes early. It cost millions of dollars to catch and convict these criminals. The victims and the families of the victims deserve justice.

There is video evidence showing criminals trying to intentionally get covid-19. By granting early release we are setting a bad precedent for these criminals. Along with no bail release for any but violent criminals is also saying that it is OK to do bad things as long as you don’t commit a capital crime.

Individuals found guilty and appropriately sentenced for their crimes, should serve the full duration of their sentence. They should not be released early for a pandemic. We as a taxpayers paid for these sentences and we deserve to get our money’s worth. With the appropriate management of their prisoners i am sure that they can work out a plan. For example, stagger meals, showers, outdoor times and visitors from the outside. No more conjugal visits. They were found guilty of heinous crimes, they should no longer enjoy the perks of a normal life.
